The current Sé de Aveiro was, at one time, the church of the Convento de São Domingos, the first convent institution implanted within the perimeter of the walls of Aveiro.

Founded in 1423, as a result of the apparition of the Virgin to Afonso Domingos the Elder, this Dominican religious institution was immediately approved by Infante D. Pedro, then Duke of Aveiro (NEVES, SEMEDO, ARROTEIA. In the 19th century, convent disappeared almost entirely, after suffering several fires, one of which, in 1843, of greater proportions (NEVES, SEMEDO, ARROTEIA, 1989, p.63), only the church surviving as a testimony of this conventual house.
