Although the exact date of the foundation of the brotherhood of Misericórdia de Aveiro is not documented, it is traditionally attributed to 1498, shortly after the foundation of Misericórdia de Lisboa.

Description

It is known that in 1502 the brotherhood functioned in full, since at the time donations were made to it, in addition to the brothers having received a letter of privileges given by D. Manuel that year.

The original headquarters of the brotherhood functioned in the Chapel of Santo Ildefonso, next to the parish church of São Miguel, however it became evident its reduced functionality to serve the works of assistance of Misericórdia in a village with an intense commercial and maritime life, connected to the Atlantic and overseas colonies.
