Description

The Aveiro Museum is installed in the former Convent of Jesus of the female Dominican Order. This convent, one of the oldest in Aveiro, dates back to the 2nd half of the century. XV, founded by D. Brites Leitão and D. Mécia Pereira.

The Aveiro Museum presents a visit circuit with two distinct but complementary parts: the monumental route and the permanent exhibition.

On the ground floor of the convent you can see the low choir, with the tomb of Santa Joana Princesa; the Church of Jesus; the cloister, with its chapels, chapter room and cafeteria.

Of particular note is the Church of Jesus, decorated with sumptuous gilt wood and Portuguese tiles. This church is a remarkable example of the exuberance of Baroque decoration.
The largest chapel was designed by carvers and sculptors António Gomes and José Correia and by painter Manuel Ferreira e Sousa.
The interior choir that contains the tomb of Princess Joan is a masterpiece of baroque art in multicolored marble with sculptural elements influenced by Italian taste, designed by the royal architect João Antunes.
The cloister that dates back to the end of the century. XV and beginning of the century. XVI, as well as the refectory, with its graceful reading platform and tiled walls are also worth mentioning.

On the upper floor, the cloister gives access to the high choir and the devotional chapels that adjoin it.

In the permanent exhibition space, two vestiges of the old convent also appear: the Sala de Lavor and the Chapel of Senhor dos Passos.

Visit the Aveiro Museum, which houses a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, carvings, tiles or jewelery, while at the same time walking through the silence of the Dominican space, between the arcades of the cloister, the contrasting colors of the church altars , or the solemn stones of the dormitory.
