The Caldeira Velha Environmental Interpretation Center (CIACV) is a structure dedicated to promoting the natural heritage of the area classified as the Caldeira Velha Natural Monument.
Estrada Regional da Lagoa do Fogo | 9600-590 Ribeira Grande
Ilha de São Miguel
The building has, among other things, the primary function of disseminating the intrinsic environmental values, allowing the visitor to discover in situ the specifics of this place of interest, making it a complementary space for informal education, while offering a vast network of resources and promotes a tourism component.
At the Natural Monument it is also possible to enjoy three thermal pools.
Concentrated in a space surrounded by a natural landscape, the building stands out as an “object placed in the landscape” that adapts to the existing vegetation and stones, giving it an organic image, but consistent with the place.
The interpretive exhibition takes the visitor on a journey through the volcanic origin of the islands, with emphasis on the formation of the Fogo Volcano. It also provides generalized information about the Natural Park, the geosites (with a focus on those located in Ribeira Grande) and in particular the area of the Natural Monument of Caldeira Velha, with regard to its biodiversity, geodiversity, geothermal and thermalism.
