One of the most renowned museums in the Azores, whose collection started in 1880 mainly with items from the fields of zoology, botany and mineralogy, is the Carlos Machado Museum, in Ponta Delgada.

Later, elements were added to the museum's collection that began to justify the appearance of ethnographic and regional art sections. In 1930 the museum appears in its current location, the Convent of Santo André, which dates from around 1600. Since then, the categories of jewelery, traditional art, tiles, porcelain, painting, among others have been added to its collection.
