Termas da Ferraria

Next to the sea, in the southwestern tip of the island of São Miguel, Azores, is the place of Ferraria. Integrated in the Regional Natural Monument of Pico das Camarinhas and Ponta da Ferraria, this nature protection area is composed of several structures of volcanic origin of great landscape and scientific value.

This geological event predates the settlement of the island of São Miguel and originated in a strombolian eruption that built a slag cone and originated a lava flow. The lava went down the cliff towards the sea and built a lava fajã.

The entrance of this lava flow into the sea, generated a phreatic explosion, which in turn created a cone-shaped volcanic structure, topped by a crater.

Not being a common crater, as it is not associated with a volcanic chimney from whose depth the magma would come, this crater is scientifically designated as a pseudocrater and is considered, for its uniqueness and beauty, to be a Geomonument to preserve.

But in addition to its beauty and scientific interest, the place of Ferraria has another great wealth: its two springs of thermal waters of volcanic origin that heat the natural pools of Ferraria and supply its thermal complex. The therapeutic qualities of Ferraria's thermal waters have led it to become an almost cult place.
