Praia da Costa Nova
Ílhavo
The occupation of the Costa Nova beach is possible only after the artificial fixation of the Ria de Aveiro bar (in 1808) and begins with the fishermen of Ílhavo who, organized in companions (groups of fishermen, led by an arrais, in which each one participated with their work and their savings), there they devoted themselves to the various fishing gear, including the xávega.
From the initial chapel, which they erected in 1822, to the haystacks to store the fishing implements and from there to the dry and salting warehouses of the sardine, Costa Nova evolved, as a fishing community, until, in the mid-19th century, with the the advent of liberalism and the rise of the bourgeoisie, came to be highly sought after by figures from local and national society during the summer. Costa Nova, between the sea and the estuary, strongly embodied the then cultivated spirit of valuing leisure and leisure times, anchored in the fashion of “going for baths”, strolling through the countryside, practicing sports activities and later going to the theater and cinema. Eça de Queiroz referred to it as follows: “and I consider this one of the most delicious spots on the globe”, in 1893.
Gradually, the old haystacks are transformed into charming seaside residences and, at the time, real mansions of aesthetic influence Art Nouveau and Art Deco appear, while the fishing community moves south. At present, Costa Nova continues to maintain its bathing charm having become a very popular place for the practice of sports activities - nautical or not, to enjoy good gastronomy, or just to relax on the golden sandy beach.
