Castro Verde is a Portuguese village belonging to the District of Beja, region of Alentejo and sub-region of Baixo Alentejo, with about 5 200 inhabitants.

It is the seat of a municipality with 569.44 km² in area and 7 276 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Aljustrel and Beja, to the east by Mértola, to the south by Almodôvar and to the west by Ourique.

Castro Verde is located in Baixo Alentejo, in the Alentejo region, in a territory known as Campo Branco. A large part of the municipality's territory is within an area of ??the European Union's Natura 2000 Network, represented by a Special Protection Area for endangered steppe bird species such as the bustard and the kestrel. The borders of the municipality are marked on the side of the roads that lead to the limits of the territory with the logo emblem of the municipality - the landmark of the municipality - "A window on the plain".

The Castro Verde Biosphere Reserve is located in the heart of “Campo Branco”, on the long and extensive plains of Baixo Alentejo. A land of smooth relief, where the view is lost to the horizon, with a great diversity of natural and cultural values, unique and of high interest on a regional, national and international scale. These values ??result from an ancient Man-Nature relationship, whose historical process of evolution of land use and occupation gave rise to an agro-ecosystem of high conservation value.

The lands of Castro Verde give the traveler a splendid look across the immense plain of the south of the Alentejo. A tracery of colors fills the smallest corner in the spring palettes that toast the fat pastures of other times of cattle transhumance, parched in the burning summer of the dry pastures of these lands also of cereal. It is here the heart of Campo Branco, where memory and tradition offer a unique socio-cultural specificity, marked by a fascinating dialogue between history and nature.
