Its construction started in the second half of the 14th century, it was ordered by D. Pedro, the 3rd Count of Barcelos, whose weapons are engraved in the archivolts of the main portal. It is a building with a transition from Romanesque to Gothic character.

It is one of the greatest exponents of Romanesque architecture in the north of the country, the target of major changes throughout the 15th to 18th centuries. In the 20th century, rosacea was restored to him. On the south side of its facade there is a bell tower that dates from the 18th century. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1927.
