The Palácio do Raio owes its designation to one of the owners - Miguel José Raio, Viscount of São Lázaro -, who acquired this property in 1867.

However, its construction dates back to the years 1754-1755, by the architect André Soares. His work is characterized by its monumentality, the plasticity of its forms, and the use of a naturalistic decorative grammar, very characteristic, of shells, jars, garlands and garlands. In the context of Portuguese art, André Soares fits between the end of the Baroque and the beginning of the Rococo, a situation that is reflected in his architectures, where the structure is Baroque but the Rococo decoration.
