The small chapel of Montélios owes its existence to São Frutuoso, bishop of Dume and Braga during the Visigoth era, who chose to be buried here, in the 60's of the 7th century.

In a first phase, and under the command of João de Moura Coutinho, the monument was intervened using the late-old buildings of Ravena as a model. For this purpose, decorative elements have been reproduced, just like others that appeared when dismantling numerous adjacent buildings.
In its smallness, Montélios is one of the most fascinating altimedieval peninsular monuments, simultaneously related to Mediterranean works from the 5th-6th and 9th-11th centuries. Regardless of the future directions of historiography, it will remain an essential work in studies dedicated to the Western Middle Ages.
