The initiative to build the Bom Jesus do Monte Elevator in Braga, by Nikolaus Riggenbach and Raul Mesnier, is due to the 19th century Braga entrepreneur Manuel Joaquim Gomes (1840-1894), whose works if completed in 1882, the year of its inauguration. Thus, it constitutes the first funicular built in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Bom Jesus Elevator is a funicular lift based on an inclined plane, and consists of two cabins that move on rails connected by a cable. As a counterweight to each other, the two cabins go up and down alternately and simultaneously along two parallel tracks in a course of about 274 meters. Each cabin has a capacity for thirty-nine people, including the driver.
