Igreja Paroquial de São Vítor

Igreja Paroquial de São Vítor

The church of São Vítor, in Braga, is considered by many to be one of the first examples, if not the first, of a temple conceived as a total work of art, where the Mannerist tradition architecture was designed to accommodate the carving and the tiles that line the interior of the church in its entirety (SMITH, 1970).

Description

The granite facade, still far removed from the glow that André Soares will introduce (PEREIRA, 1986, p. 36-38), is a good example of Braga's baroque, with lateral pilasters, a main portal flanked by two niches that house sculptural representations of two archbishops, and a triangular pediment, on whose tympanum is the coat of arms of Archbishop Dom Luís de Sousa, responsible for building the church that began in 1686, and which became the great emblem of his passage through the Archbishopric of Braga (GONÇALVES, 1982 - 1983 , p. 259). The gable ends with a cardinal cross. The rest of the elevations are animated by granite pilasters and lighting windows, which give them a rhythm, accentuating the contrast between stone and lime.

However, São Vítor stands out for its interior, covered with monumental tile panels and gilt carving. Attributed to the most renowned Lisbon painter of the late 17th century, the Spanish Gabriel del Barco, the panels of the Braga church have come to be considered as the first set of blue and white tiles of this scope, executed in Portugal, alongside the set of Lóios church (1700) also attributed to Barco. According to the existing documentation, the tiles would have been placed after 1692, since the contract for laying them dates from April 26 of that year. This complex set of panels, which develops in various registers, represents, on the nave, saints from Braga to be martyred, accompanied by other holy bishops of Braga. In the chancel we witness the steps of the life of the patron of the church - São Vítor. On the tiles of the choir, we observe São Paterno, the 19th prelate of Braga, presiding over the Toledo council in 405 (SMITH, 1970, p. 49-50).
