Description
Despite the great transformations it has undergone over the centuries, the Parish Church of Gandra still has some characteristics that seem to point to a Romanesque origin. The current temple dates from the 17th century and is dedicated to S. Martinho. It is a masonry construction, without plastering or painting. On the south side, at the angle of the main body with one of the side chapels, the sacristy is attached. The bell tower is erected on the northern gable. The main façade shows a quadrilobed rosette that culminates in a cross. The side chapels also feature rosettes of the same type. Inside, be sure to admire the gilded altars of the best Portuguese Baroque. In front of the church is the parish cross. The date of 1116 appears in the base block. The shaft is a smooth column on top of which a ribbed capital and a three-lobed cross rest.
The facade of the Chapel of Senhora Guadalupe is austere, torn only by two small windows and the main door, surmounted by a circular window. The triangular pediment, with pinnacles at the angles, finishes this facade, accentuating this face of nineteenth-century rigor. On the southern edge there is a small bell, this one with a Renaissance flavor. On the opposite side, adjacent to the north, a wide sacristy was erected. Inside, it is worth admiring the plastered ceilings and the main altar, in the taste of the Renaissance, with the 17th century image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the center.
