Palmeira de Faro
Esposende
Castro do Senhor dos Desamparados owes this curious name to its more recent military use: during the French invasions, at the beginning of the 19th century, the inhabitants of the neighborhood would have climbed the hill where the castro existed to offer resistance to the invaders, in an allegory to the that the ancient builders of this village will have done during the Roman invasions. This castro is an exception, in relation to the locations of other villages of the same type in this region: it is not implanted in one of the top of the fossil cliff, that line of elevations that separates the Atlantic plains from the mountainous interior. As an exception, it also has a storage structure, of oval shape, which was recently discovered during an archaeological excavation campaign carried out there.
The Chapel of Senhor dos Desamparados was erected on top of Castro, between the years 1825 and 1826, in response to a promise made during the French invasions. The temple faces east, has a rectangular plan and was built entirely in stone, including the roof. In 1976 it underwent restoration works. Every year that passes, on the first weekend of August, the population of Palmeira de Faro holds its party in honor of Senhor dos Desamparados.
Manuel de Boaventura, the writer and short story writer who died in 1973, is located in Lugar de Susão, who portrayed the ways of life, uses and customs of the people of Esposende like no one else.
