Description

The Cávado River, just upstream of its mouth, through meanders and shoals, was no longer navigable. At the end of the 18th century, Queen D. Maria I, in fact according to other decisions of the same type, approved works to eliminate one of the meanders of the river. Such works were of general pleasure, since they not only served the navigability of the river, but would also be useful for the local agriculture. A single drawback: they involved the demolition of some water mills, which, of course, displeased the locals. The wall was made, transforming the meander of Cávado into what has come to be called locally “the old river”. The wall, known as “marachão” or “marachão do abade” because it was owned by the abbot in the parish of Fonte Boa, was completed in 1802. Despite the brush and vegetation, you can still try to follow this wall , realizing what was once the riverbed, but truly pleasant is to enjoy the wonderful river beach of Marachão, where the green of the vegetation and the blue of the sky mirrored in the calm waters of Cávado invite you to unique moments.

In the tumultuous times of the Reconquista, when Muslim and Christian armies were disputing spans of territory, a battle was fought on the banks of the Cávado, more precisely over a stream that is affluent to it, where the Marachão do Abade now exists.

In the luck of the battle, the Christians were defeated and, when the Moors had already withdrawn, they were persecuted and slaughtered. The slaughter was such that the stream was dyed with blood and hence the name of the parish: Rio Tinto. This is the legend, but the explanation for the name of the place and the stream can well be sought for another reason: the gold mining activity in these places used the waters of the streams to wash the ore. And this alluvium, carried by the waters, should color them.
