Bragança
The Castle of Bragança, one of the most representative of medieval architecture, was built in 1409 by order of D. João I, on the foundations of the time of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.
Composed of an imposing Keep and a double wall, the complex is very well maintained and the Plaza de Armas, known as a citadel or village, where the Church of Santa Maria and Domus Municipalis is located, maintains the old medieval street houses narrow and small whitewashed houses.
The walls are made up of 15 towers and 3 doors, where the Torre da Princesa stands out, a former dependency of the Casa dos Alcaides that keeps the legend of a princess taken prisoner, and the Porta da Vila that welcomes the visitor to the castle.
At the Torre de Menagem, 17 meters wide and 33 meters high, some Gothic artistic elements are worth mentioning, namely the battlements, windows and the stone of arms of the Casa Real de Avis, founded by D. João I. go up to the top floor, for the view over the city and the surrounding landscape.
Inside the Tower, with five floors, is installed the Military Museum. It was founded in 1932, at the initiative of Colonel António José Teixeira, commander of Infantry Regiment No. 10 quartered in the citadel since the middle of the century. XIX.
The collection consists of António José Teixeira's private collection and pieces donated by the military who had participated in campaigns by military units based in Bragança, namely those in Africa and France during the First World War. The set illustrates the evolution of light weapons between the 12th and 20th centuries.
