Parque Biológico de Vinhais

The vegetation of the surrounding area is dominated by oak forests (Quercus pyrenaica), present in a large part of the territory. However, the margins of the water lines and the bottom of the valleys are occupied by riparian amials, alder tree willows (Alnus glutinosa), black willow (Salix atrocinerea), Calamagrostis arundinacea, Carex elata subsp. reuterian, Galium broterianum, leech (Frangula alnus), Oenanthe crocata, royal fetus (Osmunda regalis), Scrophularia scorodonia and Stachys sylvatica. On the slopes, heaths, heather-heaths and heaths, as well as giestals on deeper soils cover the ungrown landscape.

The very particular and complex nature of the geology of the Park's area of ​​implantation (Bragança-Vinhais ultrabasic massif) also determines a very characteristic flora and vegetation, where there are some endemisms, limited in most cases to small ultrabasic areas, such as carnation (Dianthus laricifolius subsp. Marizii), arteria (Arenaria querioides subsp. Fontiqueri), Jasione crispa subsp. serpentinica and the herbaceous Festuca brigantina and Avenula lusitanica.

In view of this natural diversity, the Park has the following features:

• Interpretation of the region's landscape, in the natural (flora, fauna and geography), cultural components (history, archeology and ethnography) and also in the area of ​​environmental education;
• Conservation of nature and promotion of biodiversity;
• Development of tourism, in particular ecotourism, recreation and leisure for the population.
