Corresponding to the need to requalify the Chimico Laboratory building, the Science Museum is opened in December 2006, an interactive space that brings science to all groups of audiences.
Largo Marquês de Pombal 3000, 3000-272
Coimbra
The requalification of the building followed the design of the architects João Mendes Ribeiro, Carlos Antunes and Desirée Pedro having been awarded, in 2007, the Diogo de Castilho Architecture Prize.
This museum consists of the various scientific collections of the University of Coimbra, distributed over two large buildings, the Colégio de Jesus and the Chimico Laboratory (designed for the experimental teaching of chemistry) built during the Pombaline Reforms.
Laboratorio Chimico - During the requalification works it was discovered that the building, from the 18th century, had been built using the dining room of the old College of Jesus, from the 17th century.
In this building is located the permanent exhibition “Secrets of Light and Matter” that illustrates the history of science, through interactive experiences and multimedia supports.
Colégio de Jesus - Building reused by William Elsden, which gives it a new facade, to house the equipment for experimental science teaching. It is in this Enlightenment spirit that the Natural History and Experimental Physics Offices are born, in the building of the old Colégio de Jesus today: Physics Office and Natural History Gallery.
Physics Office - The collection of scientific and didactic instruments in physics at the University of Coimbra is one of the most notable and rare in Europe, having been recognized, in 2016, as a European Historical Site, by the European Physics Society.
Natural History Gallery - Created for the experimental teaching of the then Faculty of Philosophia, it consists of a collection of animals, plants, fossils, minerals, rocks and models that constitutes the oldest museum in Portugal that remains in the their home space.
