This museum is housed in a building from 1593, the former Colégio de Santo Agostinho, which belonged to the Monastery of Santa Cruz, of the Order of Canons Regrantes de Santo Agostinho. Also known as “Colégio Novo” or “Colégio da Sapiência”, the building was built in a mannerist style outlined by the Italian architect Filippo Terzi.

Coimbra
After the extinction of religious orders in Portugal, the property became the property of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Coimbra. The church, the archive and the Misericórdia museum are also used here, which houses several works of art. In 1841 the institution moved its orphans here, so the space came to be known as “Colégio dos Órfãos”. At the end of the 20th century, the University of Coimbra leased part of the building in order to install the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences.
The Santa Casa da Misericórdia Museum houses a set of works of art and promotes temporary exhibitions. Founded in 2000, at the time of the 500th anniversary of the foundation of Misericórdia, it has a space for exhibitions and a room where diverse works of art are kept, belonging to the collection of Santa Casa da Misericórdia. The museum space is divided into the Old Room of the Sessions of Table or of the Dispatch, Old Room of the Portraits of the Benefactors, Gallery of the Portraits of the Brotherhood, Chapel, Sacristy, Cloister and Clock Tower. In the chapel, erected in 1593, the vault of the chancel stands out, richly decorated with symbols of a sacred and Christian character and with elements of profane nature, alluding to the Portuguese maritime epic and a pipe organ from the 19th century.
