Description

In the small enclosure, irregularly trapezoidal, there was a wall surrounded by a sturdy wall. The access door is protected by an albarrã tower. The urbanized space, with an orthogonal layout, was totally planned from scratch, with narrow streets covered by a sewage system that led the residual and rainwater to the outside of the wall. The blocks consist of central courtyard rooms.

After the Christian conquest, in 1248, by D. Paio Peres Correia, the new occupants adapted or changed the initial urban model. Inside, among ruins of houses, two cisterns testify to the two main periods of occupation of the castle: the Islamic and the Christian. Next to the door, is the ruined Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. The population exodus to a new location, to the current village of Paderne, occurred in the 16th century but pilgrimages continued until the 19th century.
