Faro, the administrative capital of the Algarve, is located in the south of Portugal.
The municipality is composed of 4 parishes: Parishes Unidas de Conceição and Estoi, Parish of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, Parish of Montenegro and Parishes Unidas da Sé and São Pedro, having about 65,000 inhabitants distributed by 210 km2 and being about 30% of this part of the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve.
The city is to the south, delimited by a 19 km long dune, interrupted by openings that connect the sea to the Ria Formosa, forming 3 main islands.

Faro is an ancient city to be (re) discovered.
The pre-Roman city called Ossónoba was one of the most important urban centers of the south of the Iberian Peninsula.
Today, due to its location, as well as being a capital city, Faro has the most important infrastructure and public services in the Algarve region.

The airport receives more than 5,000,000 tourists; the University is internationally recognized in marine sciences, tourism management studies and biotechnologies; the Central Hospital of the Algarve and 6 secondary schools are facilities that situate the central position of Faro.

The cultural and sporting dynamics of the council is a strong alliance with its role of capital.
You can visit the islands by boat, however, one of them - the island of Faro - is also accessible by car.
The islands are places of excellence where you can take a pleasant walk in the natural environment of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. You can also enjoy boating, bike rides, hiking trails and bird watching along the Ria.

The local gastronomy, based on the Ria Formosa molluscs, the white sands and warm water beaches that in some places are inhabited only by migratory birds, are among the natural characteristics to discover.

Faro is rich in natural and cultural heritage and invites you to discover it.
