In 1963, José Lúcio da Silva enters the scene and expresses the desire to build a theater for the city. The work starts on an old vineyard property of the Marques da Cruz family, becoming an unmistakable mark of modernist times in Portugal.
Av. Heróis de Angola, 2400-093
Leiria
The laying of the first stone takes place on July 29, 1964.
The work is completed in about 18 months, with the theater inaugurated on the night of January 15, 1966, a Saturday, with the presence of Admiral Américo Thomaz.
Over the years, several renovations were made, such as the implementation of the digital sound system, the new chairs, the new carpet, the remodeling of the stage and lastly, the acquisition of a new machine for projection, allowing a better cut image and making it one of the best rooms in the country.
The José Lúcio da Silva Theater is a «monumental» concert hall, with a capacity for 763 seats, presenting excellent scenic characteristics that provide a visual comfort currently rare in the projection rooms and thus justifying its prominent position in the city's culture .
