National Monument and masterpiece of baroque architecture, of Italian influence, by architect. João Antunes, was built on the primitive temple, dated 1568, which collapsed in 1681.

The works of the current church started in the last quarter of the century. XVII (1684), being abandoned in 1712. These works, completed only in the middle of the century. XX, with the construction of the dome. Since then it has been home to the National Pantheon, with the tombs of the Presidents of the Republic and famous artists in two different towers. Of octagonal plan, centered by a Greek cross, with rounded tops, inscribed in a square formed by 4 block turrets, it presents its main façade torn by a portal framed by Solomonic columns of composite capitals and bas-relief with the patron saint.
