Leonor Janeiro (Profabril) and Nick Jacobs (SOM) are responsible for the architecture of the Vasco da Gama Tower, in a direct allusion to the old ships. Designed for the North zone of EXPO 98, currently Parque das Nações, its lower volume on the water can be interpreted as the hull of a vessel, its steel structure, about 140m high, resembles a sail blown by the wind , on top of which, like the basket of the crow's nest, is a panoramic circular restaurant (closed since 2001).
Cais das Naus, 2.21.02
Lisboa
Its ascent is made by means of 4 panoramic elevators. This Tower provided excellent views over the Tagus River, the city of Lisbon and the south bank, during the Exhibition and until October / 2004, when it was closed. Subsequently, the structure attached to the tower was partially demolished to build a five-star hotel, which appears imposing, without touching the tower, but taking advantage of its architecture, translating a perfect symbiosis between the hotel and the tower, maintaining the view the panoramic restaurant.
