Padaria da Cortiça works with one of nature's most extraordinary products, Cork, 100% Sustainable, Biodegradable, Vegan, Printed with environmentally friendly inks and Produced in Portugal.

Cork is the bark of the cork oak, a 100% natural plant tissue. Removed every nine years, without any tree being cut during this process, cork gives rise to an infinity of products, from the traditional, such as cork, to the most innovative and unexpected.

Each cork oak takes 25 years to be stripped for the first time and only after the third stripping (at age 43) does the cork, then called “amadia”, have the quality required for processing.

The extraction is carried out by highly specialized professionals, always between May and August, when the tree is in a more active phase of growth and it is easier to strip it without injuring the trunk. The cork oak is the only tree whose bark regenerates itself, acquiring a smoother texture after each extraction. It can be stripped about 17 times over an average lifespan of 200 years.
