The Capuchos Convent is one of the multiple examples of the 16th century pietist religiosity in Portugal and became known for its extreme construction poverty. Small in size, with cells and dormitory covered with cork and a chapel whose dome is formed in the rock itself, they would motivate the affirmation of William Beckford who, in 1787, related his visit to the Convent saying: "we followed a narrow path over several miles a wild and deserted hill that took us to the Capuchos Convent that at first glance corresponds to the image that we have of Robinson Crusoé's address "(William Beckford and Portugal. The journey of a passion. Exhibition catalog. National Palace of Queluz, 1987 , p. 159).

The Convent materializes the ideal of fraternity and universal brotherhood of the Franciscan friars. Those who inhabited it were part of the Arrábida Province, of the Order of Friars Minor Regular and Observers.
The convent's gatehouse, a simple carport with a roof and wooden beams lined with cork, constitutes a fair expression of the poverty and restraint that guided this construction devoid of decorative elements.
