Description

In it is open to the public a long-term exhibition, whose genesis was born from the hands of the collector Miguel Barbosa and his wife, Fernanda Barbosa, who, for about 50 years, gathered a unique collection composed of thousands of fossils of cultural and cultural value. incalculable scientific knowledge.

The exhibition space has a dynamic presentation, using concepts of furniture and equipment based on modernity, also playing with the use of new technologies.

The exhibition open to the public begins with the formation of the Primitive Earth and the mutations that it has undergone over millions of years, during the different Geological Times, from the Pre-Cambrian to the Quaternary, showing all the evolution of life through the Municipal Collections Paleontology, Mineralogy, Malacology and Petrography from the most diverse parts of the world.

This is the fourth Natural History Museum established in the Greater Lisbon Region, being the most modern and the most universal as to the provenance of its pieces, covering all of the continents of planet Earth.

Among the more than 10,000 fossils of the museum, a superb Collection of Trilobites and some rare and very well preserved examples of Dinosaurs stand out. Also the great beauty of the minerals, with pieces still in rock, already isolated and polished is an attraction for the visitor, both nationally and abroad.

In the Malacology Collection, the Bivalves and some Gastropods of different origins stand out. Finally, in the Petrography Collection, not only are the main rocks of the national territory represented, but also, due to their rarity and importance, the rocks originating from Space, the so-called meteorites, focusing on the famous Nantan Meteorite ( China), whose impact with the Earth is already referenced in documents of the 16th century.

However, the star of the museum's firmament, that is, its main banner consists of a "Flying Reptile", Braseodactylus sp, from Chapada do Araripe (Ceará, Brazil), already studied by the Geology Department of the Natural History Museum of Karlsruhe, in Germany and considered, not only as a unique species, but also, in turn, the only whole piece detected until today in the world.
