The Pena National Palace represents one of the best expressions of 19th century Romanticism in the world. Rising on a rugged rock, it is the second highest point in the Serra de Sintra (above the palace there is only Cruz Alta, at 528m altitude).

The Palace is located in the eastern part of the Parque da Pena, which is necessary to walk to reach the steep ramp that the Baron of Eschwege built to access the castellated building. The Palace itself consists of two wings: the former Manueline convent of the Order of São Jerónimo and the wing built in the 19th century by King Fernando II. These wings are surrounded by a third architectural structure, in which an imaginary castle of round paths with merlons and battlements, watchtowers, an access tunnel and even a drawbridge is fantasized.
On 7 July 2007, it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal, being, in fact, the first romantic palace in Europe, built about 30 years before the charismatic Schloss Neuschwanstein, in Bavaria.
The Palace and the Park were conceived and implemented as a whole. From the Palace, the visitor sees a mantle of trees that occupies more than 200 hectares, thus constituting the Parque da Pena.
This park has beautiful paths and sidewalks, with numerous garden buildings existing there. There are bridges and caves, garden benches, pergolas and fountains. Small houses where guards and other servants were housed. Greenhouses and nurseries with camellias, rhododendrons and roses of unusual and very rare strains. Sculptures, like the warrior who can be seen from the Palace, as if to say that he is there to protect and guard him.
The lakes near the exit to Castelo dos Mouros are also picturesque and pleasant, surrounded by a large corridor of tree ferns.
The entire Parque da Pena is today considered the park of Europe, holder of the richest and most unusual set of tree species that did not exist in many other countries and continents where they originated.
