Description

.

The Serra de Sintra, also known as Monte da Lua, is a mountain in the municipalities of Sintra and Cascais, in Portugal. It is located at the western end of the European continent. It measures about 10 kilometers from east to west and approximately 5 km wide, with its highest peak at an altitude of 528 meters, in Cruz Alta, also reaching a topographic prominence of 336 meters and isolation of 51.37 km

It is integrated in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. It has a very rich fauna, being an example of it, the fox, the gineta, the mole, the salamander, the peregrine falcon, the viper and several species of scaly reptiles. Its climate is tempered with a lot of oceanic influences, therefore presenting a higher rainfall than the rest of Greater Lisbon. The result is also unique vegetation. About nine hundred species of flora are indigenous and 10% are endemic. Some of them are oak, cork and stone.

It is the target of several tourist excursions. It is also very popular with climbers and mountaineers, since the escarpments are mostly oriented to the west, which increases the light time on summer afternoons.

It is in the Serra de Sintra that are located: the Castelo dos Mouros, the Palácio da Pena, the Convento dos Capuchos, the National Palace of Sintra, the Palace of Monserrate and Quinta da Regaleira.
