The Mercado dos Lavradores, with a project by Edmundo Tavares (1892-1983), was inaugurated on November 24, 1940. A testimony to the architecture of the Estado Novo, it reflects, due to the grandeur of its design, the intention of making it the great pole city supplier.

They adorn the facade, the main door and the fishmonger, large panels of tiles from the Batisttini Faience by Maria de Portugal, dating from 1940 and painted with regional themes, by João Rodrigues. In its space organized in small “Squares”, “Largos”, “Ruas” and “Escadinhas”, products of all kinds are sold, colors, sounds, smells and different people are mixed.
The Market Night takes place here on December 23rd: all night long the Market and the streets around it are invaded by people who sing and dance, eat and drink in a festive and decorated Christmas way. During the day, around the market, regional fruits and vegetables are displayed in an impressive way, so that last minute shopping can be done.
