The Cidade do Açúcar Museum was created by the Funchal City Council, under the tutelage of the same, opened to the public for the 1st time on October 12, 1996.
Praça De Colombo, 9000-057
Funchal
It is located in Praça Colombo, between the streets of Sabão and João Esmeraldo, in the center of the historic area of the city.
It is a space dedicated to the history of the island sugar industry, between the 15th and 19th centuries, one of the most well-known and remarkable phases of the history and culture of Madeira Island, known as the "Ouro Branco" cycle. The main core of the museum's collection collects the archaeological finds from the excavations carried out in the old houses of the Flemish merchant João Esmeraldo, carried out in Praça Colombo in 1989, on the site of the buildings demolished in 1876.
The collection of sculpture, jewelery and furniture also stands out in this collection, a heritage that reflects the economic power derived from the sugar cycle.
The main mission of this museum space is to make visitors aware of the main historical testimonies of sugar production and technology, in the period when it was at its peak, marking one of the most significant economic cycles in the entire history of the archipelago.
