Icon of the architectural landscape of downtown Funchal, with the designation of National Monument in 1943, the São Lourenço Palace is a fortress ordered by King Dom Manuel I in the 15th century, consisting of a fortress and a palace.

Description

The Palace has a museum center that displays various objects of a military and artistic nature with pieces of decorative arts, Portuguese and European, and also has a gallery of real portraits.

In 1991, works were carried out to requalify some unoccupied spaces inside the Palácio de S. Lourenço, such as the old Casa da Guarda, for example. This space was intended for the future installation of the Military Museum. After the completion of the requalification work, a permanent exhibition was opened in 1992, which can be visited.

The Military Museum of Madeira was created in 1993 by Order 72 / MDN / 93 of 30 June. It is under the Command of the Commander of the Military Zone of Madeira and has a technical dependence on the current Military History and Culture Department. The Military Museum of Madeira was reopened with the current configuration on May 12, 2010 and with the exposed themes, approved by Order 28 / CEME / 2009:

Madeira in the context of Portuguese expansion;
Military History of Madeira;
Military Fortifications and Infrastructures in the Region.
Currently, it has an innovative and unique Visual Effects Room in RAM, which, through a 3 D film and different sensations, offers the public a different way to get in touch with the 600 years of military presence in the Madeira Archipelago.

In addition, the rooms found in the Torreão Joanino of the Palácio de S. Lourenço where the evolution of the National Flag throughout history and a set of pictures that represent many of the forts and fortresses that constituted the defense of the Funchal at the beginning of the 19th century.

Monday to Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 12 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm
Closed on Sundays and public holidays
