The São Lourenço Palace, located in a strategic point of defense of the Island (Avenida Zarco), is considered as the most imposing example of civil and military architecture on the island of Madeira. Its construction began in the first half of the 16th century and was completed in the Spanish dynasty that reigned in Portugal from 1580 to 1640.

Funchal
After having a defensive function, this building became the residence of the Captains Donatars of Funchal and the Capitães-Generais Governors, until the establishment of the constitutional government in 1834, where it became definitively a residential function.
In 1836, the fortress - palace was separated into two areas. To the west, the Palace, seat of the official residence of the Civil Governor, comprising the Noble Rooms, Offices, Private Area, Gardens and Bulwarks southwest, northeast and north. To the east, the Military Area, today affects the Command of the Military Zone of Madeira. In this place we can find a museum center, which addresses various aspects of Madeira's military history and where it is possible to discover a collection of armaments dating from the 17th century to the present.
In 1943 it was classified as a National Monument and, from 1976, with the institution of the autonomous system, it became the Official Residence of the Minister of the Republic. In 2006, it was designated as the Official Residence of the Representative of the Republic for the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
