Description Portalegre

Portalegre is a Portuguese city, capital of the Portalegre district, located in the Alentejo region and Alto Alentejo sub-region.

It is the seat of a municipality with 447.14 km² in area [3] and 21 868 inhabitants (2012), subdivided into 7 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Castelo de Vide, to the northeast by Marvão, to the east by Spain, to the south by Arronches and Monforte and to the west by Crato. The Municipality of Portalegre is located between the plain and the mountain, framed in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, enjoying an enormous cultural, landscape and gastronomic richness.

At a cultural level, several cultural events and associations stand out (the Jazz Festival, the Conventual Confectionery Fair, the City Feasts, in addition to several Regional Gastronomy Fairs, Islamic Fairs, Medieval Fairs and Chestnut Fairs).

The Municipality of Portalegre serves 6 rural parishes: Alagoa; Alegrete; Fortios; Reguengo and São Julião; Ribeira de Nisa and Carreiras; Urra, and 1 urban parish: Sé and São Lourenço.
