The municipality of Amarante is bordered by the Tâmega River and the Serra do Marão. It is thought that its origin would have been in the Serra da Aboboreira, due to the existence of a vast megalithic necropolis, the only exhaustively studied and the largest that are currently known in Portuguese territory.

Crossing the Tâmega River and surrounded by Serras, this beautiful city proudly displays its 17th century houses, whose colorful wooden balconies adorn the narrow streets, restaurants with terraces overlooking the river or the beautiful São Gonçalo bridge which leads to the monumental monastery of the sixteenth century with the name of the same saint

The call to communion with nature invites to outdoor activities, where you can practice mountaineering, canoeing, fishing, hunting, golf, climbing and rafting.

The fun does not end with these sports activities, in the county there are several festivities throughout the year, where they preserve the genuineness of the traditions that are already lost in other corners of the country.

For lovers of conventual sweets, this county is master. With diversity of choices, these candies were born from the hands of the nuns of Santa Clara, who took advantage of the eggs offered to them by the devotees.
