The settlement of the territory that corresponds to the present municipality of Marco de Canaveses dates back to the Neolithic period, due to the vestiges found, namely some funerary monuments. From the time of the Roman occupation, the remains of Tongóbriga, a Roman settlement of which there is a spa, the forum, housing areas and a necropolis, have reached the present day.

The municipality of Marco de Canaveses has two of the most beautiful rivers in the country: the Douro and the Tâmega. In the artificial reservoirs of Carrapatelo, in the Douro, and the Torrão, in Tâmega, nautical recreational activities can be done, such as sport fishing, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing.

The harmony between the river and the mountain, make this region one of the most sublime places of Portugal from the landscape point of view, bringing many tourists who appreciate the contact with nature.
