On the right bank of the Tâmega River, just four kilometers from the county seat and divided by the parishes of Sobretâmega and São Nicolau, is the small village of Canaveses.
Sobretâmega
Marco de Canaveses
The simple set of houses of traditional design in granite stone hides a past rich in history, the stage of great military deeds during the French Invasions. There are still countless vestiges of that past that deserve a careful visit: the Parish Church of Santa Maria Maior, Rua Direita, Casa da Palmatória, the Chapel of São Sebastião, Casa do Fontainho, Ponte dos Asnos, Casa de Penidos and Casa da Ribeira, restored and adapted to welcome visitors.
