Description

A part of these ruins have already been discovered by archaeologists and can be visited:

- Walled perimeter with about 13 hectares, covering the entire village of Freixo, within which you can visit neighborhoods of pre-Roman and Roman dwellings, built between the 1st and 5th centuries AD .;

- The castrejo (pre-Roman) spa, the forum and the Roman baths, the latter dating from the 1st and 2nd century AD, located outside the walled perimeter, at the base of the hill on which the village of Freixo is located.

For its monumentality, the Roman forum and thermal baths, which are the hallmarks of this archaeological site, stand out.

The Freixo Archaeological Station has several facilities that are at the service of its visitors: an Interpretive Center (in which the reception for visitors works), with a permanent exhibition dedicated to changing the lives of the inhabitants of Tongobriga when they were integrated into the Roman Empire ; a Restaurant / Cafeteria; an Auditorium (in which a documentary about the site can be viewed), four nuclei of visitable archaeological ruins and several temporary exhibitions.

The village of Freixo itself is a pleasant and historic place to visit, which is part of the “Historical Villages of Portugal”. The parish church of Santa Maria (under which there are ruins of Roman houses with mosaics) stands out; the buildings related to one of the largest fairs in the North of Portugal, extinct at the beginning of the 20th century (the so-called “Feira da Quaresma”); and the Solar ordered to be built by Captain-Mor de Canaveses, António de Serpa Pinto, at the time of the French Invasions.
