Paços de Ferreira is considered the Capital of Furniture in Portugal, and today it is the largest furniture business center in the country.

The amount of existing monuments, the citadel of Sanfins and the countless traces of different times, are the proof that this municipality has been inhabited for several centuries. It is in fact in Castro culture that Paços de Ferreira, through Sanfins, affirms today a predominance at national level. Due to the existence of an unusual archaeological site and the careful and persistent study of several archaeologists throughout the 20th century, Sanfins has become the ultimate exponent in the Castro culture of the peninsular northwest.

Integrated in the Terras de Sousa, in the High Middle Ages, the territory of the current Paços de Ferreira had, for centuries, in the Ferreira Monastery its greatest influence.

Located in a transition zone, connected simultaneously to the interior and the coast, with the identity of the Douro exerting a marked influence, the current territory of Paços de Ferreira has grown over the centuries integrated in the most diverse civil, legal and religious units. The municipalities of Refojos de Riba d'Ave and Aguiar de Sousa brought together most of the parishes that today make up the municipality, with a strong legal connection to the district of Porto and the division between the bishoprics of Braga and Porto.

In gastronomy we find delicacies with a lot of history, such as Capão à Freamunde, a traditional dish from the city of Freamunde, or Rochas da Citânia, Brisas do Pilar and Calvários, typical sweets of the region.

The arts and knowledge kept and passed on from generation to generation show the talent of the people of this municipality, as well as works in weaving, basketry, matting, ceramics, pottery, stewing and restoration.
