In Paredes, in the Castromil and Banjas region, there are important traces of gold mining from Roman times.

In this way, the Municipality, recognizing the geomineiras patrimonial potentialities of the municipality, created in 2013, the Interpretation Center of the Gold Mines of Castromil and Banjas (CIMOCB), whose main objective is the valorization and dissemination of the Geological, Archaeological and Cultural Heritage of Paredes .
This dynamic and innovative space, with a clear, simple and appealing exhibition discourse aimed at different audiences, appears as a welcoming place and starting point for visits to the Castromil Gold Mines, developed and promoted a few years ago by the Municipality of Paredes in partnership with the Department of Geosciences, Environment and Spatial Planning of FCUP.
In this center the visitor is awakened to themes related to the occurrence of gold and its exploitation by the Romans, which integrate the areas of science and history such as geology, mining archeology, mining and the Roman occupation of the territory. In this way, and according to the objectives of those who contact us, we seek the use of technical language, but at the same time suitable for different requests.
CIMOCB, like the Minas de Ouro de Castromil, is part of the Route of Mines and Points of Mining and Geological Interest in Portugal and is part of the e-book “Minas e Geologia - Norte de Portugal” by Turismo Porto e Norte.
Visit to CIMOCB by appointment.
