Palacete da Granja

Palacete da Granja

Called “Palacete da Granja”, the building belonged to Joaquim Bernardo Mendes, a Portuguese returned from Brazil. Upon his arrival he received the title of Visconde de Paredes. It was at that time that he built this magnificent palace with some Brazilian characteristics, among which stand out a balustrade that integrates the triangular pediment, accentuating the roof line, the facades covered with yellow and white high relief tiles, coming from the Massarelos factory, large doors and windows.

Description

Access to the main entrance is through a gate, profusely worked, of the Fundição de Massarelos, where a monogram of the owner stands out from the inside. It is also worth mentioning a beautiful garden, in which camellias and a redwood stand out, delimited by a wall and two lookouts / arbor that complete the romanticism of the complex.

It was in this palace that King Carlos was received in June 1895.

In the early 90s, of the 20th century, the Municipality of Paredes, aware of the peculiar characteristics of the “Palacete da Granja”, through a protocol signed with the Brotherhood of Misericórdia de Paredes, proceeded to its recovery and later dynamization as Casa da Culture.
