Bridge over the Sousa River integrated in the road that left the city of Porto (Cale) passed through Valongo, Paredes, Penafiel towards Vila Real and Trás-os-Montes. This route is referred to in the 1258 Inquiries as a “stratam”.
Rua da Cepeda 4580-073 Castelões de Cepeda
Paredes
Its layout was decisive for the development of the localities where it passed, and the name “road” became a reference of location used in the documentation. The bridge consists of a single round arch, with narrow and elongated stonework staves that are arranged in regular and well squared alignments. At the entrance to the bridge, on the left bank, upstream, there is a “bench” embedded between the guards, carved in granite ashlar that may correspond to the toll collector's place. It may have had Roman origin, however, the known documentation indicates that in the beginning of the 15th century the bridge will have undergone a reconstruction. In the 18th century it is mentioned as an important reference, associated with the route that came from the city of Porto to Trás-os-Montes, as well as to cross the Sousa River.
