Deployed in a place with natural defense conditions, on the right bank of the Sousa River, it assumes strategic interest for the Lands of the Sousa Valley. Built, probably, in the 10th century, when the Christian chronicles refer to the taking of the castle by Almançor during his incursions to Santiago de Compostela.

From the 11th century onwards, it became the head of Terra de Aguiar dominated by the Sousas or Sousões, becoming in 1258, the judicial administrative center of the “Julgado de Aguiar de Sousa”, one of the most powerful in the region of Entre - Douro- and - Minho, until the 19th century.
From the Castle, the remains of a tower of irregular, quadrilateral plan, built in shale and quartzite masonry were visible.
Classified as a Monument of Public Interest and integrated in the Route of the Romanesque, it was the object of conservation and enhancement works. Archaeological work revealed the 150 cm wide primitive wall and objects that were part of the daily life of the castle's men were exhumed, such as fragments of pottery for domestic use and an arrowhead of war or hunting activities. As for the recovery intervention, in addition to improving access, it transformed the tower into a balcony for the landscape, from which the visitor, inserted in a framework where mother nature is lavish, can observe the quartzitic escarpments of the surrounding mountains, listen to the waterfalls of the levadas and witness the Sousa river converging in the direction of the Douro.
