Historic Center of Porto

The Historic Center of Porto, the oldest part of the city and classified as a World Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 1996, congregates the parishes of Sé, Vitória, São Nicolau and Miragaia (includes Port Wine Cellars). With roots of medieval origin, and despite all the changes, the Historic Center of Porto maintains its urban characteristics, unique and incomparable with other cities of Europe ... that is why it is highly recommended a walking tour through the typical streets of this city area where you will come across monuments of wealth and invaluable, as if time had stopped in the Middle Ages!
Porto is, in fact, a city of incalculable value!

Port Wine Cellars: History Places

Knowing the Port Wine Cellars, where this wine is stored after carefully harvested and prepared on the slopes of the Douro Region, is to know the history of this product, which is the brand image of this city.
Located on the other bank of the Douro River, in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia.
The cellars, almost all of them already centennial, have a visit program, and it is frequent, besides the guided visit to the cellars where the wines are matured in kites of various sizes, the existence of wine tastings. In some cellars visits are free, while in others a small entrance fee is charged.

In this city there is also the Institute of Douro and Porto Wines, where you can find, besides a shop with wines from this region, books about these wines and the wine region. Here you can also watch videos and there are commented evidence and guided tours.

Quinta do Noval and Espaço Porto Cruz - These two spaces are not cellars. In the Quinta do Noval store you can taste the magnificent Port wines of the estate that they have in the Douro Valley, where they are made in a traditional way.

Rua Santa Catarina

If you like to shop and you want to feel the atmosphere of the most traditional shopping street in Porto, Rua Santa Catarina is probably the best option. This is a car-restricted street, so it will no longer be a concern for you and you can take a leisurely stroll and take time out to see lots of traditional shops, coffee shops, beautiful buildings and churches.

Praça da Liberdade

In the heart of the city of Porto, we find Praça da Liberdade, a wide avenue defined by the City Hall that is at the North top, a meeting point for most festivals, live concerts that take place in the most striking moments of Oporto City. A lively avenue during the day and night, surrounded by beautiful buildings that mark its Architecture.

Aquarium SEA LIFE Porto

The SEA LIFE Port is an oceanarium with over 3000 fascinating creatures, from the Mariza turtle to sharks, rays, seahorses and many others! At SEA LIFE Porto, you can walk through the country's first underwater tunnel and cross 500,000 liters of water, the sharks are waiting for you!

Our terrace has a privileged view over the Atlantic Ocean and our cafeteria offers menus for breakfast, lunch and snack.

Lello Bookshop

The Lello & Brother Library has been considered in the last years as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. At your entrance we see a neo-gothic façade and a classic interior, with a staircase and wooden walls that make us go back in time, a must visit even for those looking for other stops. The building dates back to 1906.

Torre dos Clérigos

The Clérigos Tower is probably Porto's main business card. The Baroque style tower was designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, who left an important mark in the heritage of the city, was built between 1754 and 1763. One can climb to the top of the tower through a narrow staircase, we admire one of the best and most extensive views of the city.

Cais da Ribeira

Next to the River Douro and without leaving the historical zone of the City, we find the old quarter of Ribeira, recovered and preserved for

Cathedral of Porto (Sé Cathedral)

The Oporto Cathedral is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city. With Romanesque roots, the building has undergone many changes over the centuries, and from the square in front of the cathedral, you will enjoy one of the best views of the city.

São Bento Railway Station

Without leaving the historical center and near the Douro River, São Bento is the oldest and most beautiful. This station was built on the location of the former Convent of Saint Benedict of Avé-Maria. Once inside, look closely at the 20,000 painted tiles on the walls. These illustrate the evolution of transportation in the area as well as some important historical events.

Palácio da Bolsa

What was the Porto stock exchange, became the headquarters of the city's Commercial Association. Built in 1842, its main architectural style is the British neoclassical, showing nevertheless a great mixture of styles and decorative arts. The Arab Room is the most incredible room of the palace, which transports us directly to the Muslim culture of the old days.

Church of São Francisco

Between advances and retreats, it took two centuries to build. A must visit for lovers of Gothic architecture. It presents a rather simple exterior comparatively to its interior that surprises any visitor by its beauty, with colors and the golden columns and altars.

Wineries of Porto

Bars and entertainment

Casa da Música

The House of Music is a modern building of irregular shape was designed by Rem Koolhaas, a world-renowned Dutch architect as part of the city's project for the European Capital of Culture in 2001 which has become an icon of the city. It houses a cultural institution, three resident orchestras and offers a broad cultural agenda, from classical and children's concerts to dinner parties and parties. It works for public visits and you can take a guided tour of the building and its magnificent rooms.

Serralves Museum

Bolhão Market

The Bolhão Market is a lively central market with a variety of products on sale. The story goes that there was a bubbling fountain where today is the market and the name comes from there. The market, just around the corner from Café Majestic, occupies an entire block from Sá da Bandeira Street to a few blocks east of Avenida dos Aliados. You will find a variety of birds, some live and some not, cheeses, nuts, cleaning products, olives and greens for sale. In autumn are the heaps of chestnuts that we find on display. Robust fishmongers preach what they sell with sweeping voices, warring over patrons. It is a lively place at the Bolhão Market, which is open from morning until early afternoon from Monday to Saturday.

Monastery of the Serra do Pilar

This monastery is located at the top of the mountain that gives its name, the Serra do Pilar, in Vila Nova de Gaia. With a magnificent and panoramic landscape, where you can see all the riverside area of Porto and Gaia to the Arrábida Bridge, as well as the historical center of Porto, the D. Luís Bridge, the Ponte São João and the Fontainhas area.

With a circular shape typical of the height of the Renaissance, a vault surrounded by a balcony, and a circular cloister with 36 Ionic columns - a unique example in Portugal -, the Serra do Pilar Monastery has been a World Heritage Site since 1996.

In this space there is the possibility of viewing films about the four sites classified as World Heritage by UNESCO (the historical center of Porto and Guimarães, the Alto Douro Vinhateiro and the Archaeological Park of Foz Côa). Here you will also find a statue of the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques.

Queijo Castle

If you head north from Foz along Avenida do Brasil (which later becomes Avenida Montevideo) you will cross with Castelo do Queijo on the rocky coast. The fort was named after the rocks on which it was made to look like pieces of cheese. The official name is San Francisco Xavier Fort. The fort is very beaten by the sea. It is a great place to feel the sea breeze on the face. The Castelo do Queijo marks the end of Avenida da Boavista. There is a plate embedded in the cement to celebrate the races of the Grand Prix of Porto (Boavista Circuit).

House of the Infante

Casa do Infante served as a mint and customs house in the 14th century. Est is open to the public for a small entrance fee. Casa do Infante serves as a archive, a small museum of history and an exceptional collection of mosaics. During the renovation works were discovered Roman foundations, giving perspective of the antiquity of the place. Casa do Infante is located on Rua da Alfândega, just west of Ribeira Square.

Gardens and Parks in Porto

And because you will definitely need to take a break to relax and even to walk in a relaxed and in contact with nature, in Porto you will find a wide variety of gardens and parks to visit.

The best known, Parque da Cidade, is even the largest urban park in the country, occupying 83 hectares and about 10 kilometers of paths!
In this park there are lakes, varied plants, all integrated in the beautiful city of Porto. This park was considered, in 2000, by the Order of Engineers, as one of the '100 most remarkable works built in the twentieth century in Portugal'. The Sea Life Center, a public-access oceanarium, is located in this space.

Serralves Park, at the Serralves Foundation, presents a wide variety of plants and trees, with a lake and meadow, in a space where it will be easy to spend a whole day strolling!

If you are looking for a nice space with a good view, a kind of refuge from the hustle and bustle of a city, the Gardens of the Palacio de Cristal are an excellent option.
