The oldest works for the exploration of gold date, at least, from the time of the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. A testimony to this activity is the existence, mainly in the Santa Justa and Pias Mountains, of a mining complex consisting of several fojos and sections dating from the 1st to the 3rd centuries.
Serra de Santa Justa,
Valongo
The Fojo das Pombas is the most emblematic, as it is possible to observe the integration of several techniques used by the Romans and also because several pieces have been found in this place that confirm the age of the exploration. Highlight for its singular beauty and exuberance due to the flora that develops due to its particular edaphoclimatic conditions.
