It is known that this building was already under construction in 1573, but it is likely that the works started around 1570. It is likely, although with a high degree of uncertainty, that the author of his project was Simão de Ruão. The original plan, which included a moat, was never fully implemented. Excluding this fact in 1641, the construction works are considered completed, with some artillery still to be placed.
Avenida Brasil
Vila do Conde
It features a polygonal floor plan with five bastions, decorated at guardhouse angles. Its construction was aimed at defending the port of Ave, losing its military value after the end of the civil war in 1834. It is currently converted into a hotel.
From the fort we enjoy a relaxing panoramic view over the entire Atlantic front.
