Convento Corpus Christi

Convento Corpus Christi

The Corpus Christi Convent was originally built by the river in the 14th century. The Church experienced a gradual degradation caused by the constant flooding of the Douro River, which led to the construction, by the nuns of S. Domingos, of the current chapel in the century. XVII. The monastery underwent profound changes in the 17th and 18th centuries and was extinguished in 1834.

Description

It highlights the richness and artistic value of the octagonal chapel, topped by a stone dome, with four side altars, the high choir with the ceiling formed by 49 coffered panels decorated with oil paintings, and also the chair, from the first half of the 17th century, with rich ornamentation works including volutes and masks.

Here is the tombstone of Álvaro de Cernache, ensign of the flag of the Valentine's Wing at the Battle of Aljubarrota.

Today, the Corpus Christi Convent, in a privileged location next to the Cais de Gaia, is a municipal facility of intense cultural activity.
