The Church of Santa Marinha, which was once a small Romanesque chapel, has undergone consecutive restorations throughout the 17th-18th centuries. In 1745, the body of the church was rebuilt, the design of which was by Nicolau Nasoni.
Largo Joaquim Magalhães | Centro Histórico
Vila Nova de Gaia
It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1974. A good example of Baroque architecture is a large church, with plenty of light, with a longitudinal plan and a single nave with tile paneling throughout the area that extends to the chancel. The triumphal arch is overlaid with carved pelmet and flanked by two gilded altarpieces.
In the chancel and on the triangular pediment are canvases with carved frames, the "Adoration of the Magi" having the best line. A prominent feature will be the Joanine altarpiece richly adorned with Solomonic columns, plant motifs and angels.
The main façade is quite stripped of ornamentation, whose tower of later construction dates from 1894.
