The most popular of the bridges over the Douro River was inaugurated on October 31, 1886 by the monarch who baptized it. His project is due to Engº Théophile Seyrig, who had already collaborated with Eiffel in the construction of the Maria Pia Bridge. Its structure, true iron filigree, supports two trays joined by an arch.
